They changed allot of items perhaps trying to copy the premium places but with cheap copy cats they changed the hot dog buns , they wedge the dog inside a thick slice of bread. eww they have the wrong buns on the burgers. I used to love it here. but now no way my mom absolutely hated the experience. on a positive note; they still have coke products.

Eating here just puts me in a better mood. I like the whole 50's vibe of this place. Had my very first Johnny's rocket burger and was pretty impressed. Cheeseburger with chili cheese fries on the side with a vanilla shake. Soooo good! Burger was meaty and juicy and fries were addicting! My tummy was completely content! Love their cute ketchup art as well. Nice touch.

Loved it! Walked over here cause it's close to my new place.. Ordered chili cheese fries, #12 burger no pickles, and vanilla malt shake. Exchanged my dollar bill for some change and played Build Me Up Buttercup by The Foundations. That was the first of many songs that we kept playing throughout our meal. Patty was juicy and savory, the bun was yellow (??) wasnt sure if they used corn flour, or a hellotta butter. The bill came to be $20 after a good tip, because I enjoyed my meal, the waitress is pretty decent in terms of attentiveness, but she was nice enough to give us a free nickel to try see if the jukebox was working. This was the first Johnny Rockets restaurant, according to the bronze plaque on the wall. Yumm yay!

WHAT?!?! How does this place only have three stars?! I literally had the tastiest, juiciest most well constructed burger that I've had in months let alone in Los Angeles. Our service was so efficient and friendly and the counter was spotless. I really enjoyed popping into Johnny Rockets and I'm not even a fan of Johnny Rockets like that. I've been to a couple other locations; most recently the one in South Beach Miami the prices where so inflated and I was very very underwhelmed with the quality of the food. That's why I was so pleasantly surprised by not only the delicious burger and fries and great service but also the really affordable price (my burger was 6.49) keep it JR's.

It's no In and Out Burger, however, the burger and the atmosphere more than make up for it. Prices are mid range, however, I came here more or less for the novelty. Milk shakes are awesome and they give you a generous portion. Loved the customer service.

I mean, who can dislike Johnny Rockets? Burgers, hot dogs, malts, shakes, fries -- everything greasy or creamy and deliciously bad for you. You really can't go wrong. This Johnny Rockets is smaller on the inside, but has a nice seating area right outside in the middle of Melrose in Hollywood. It's the perfect spot for a cheap and greasy snack from a shopping break. The folks who work here are nice and quick with service. My picks are the chocolate malt (duh) and the Jalapeno Burger is pretty good too.

The first location for this classic retro burger joint. They execute their faithful to the 50s menu well with a few modern menu additions. Great burgers, shakes and fries . 50s & 60s tunes on the nickel jukebox. Parking is tough but it's worth a trip.

I haven't eat here in years but what I do remember is their menu used to be more extensive and had desserts. Also the burgers as I remember them used to be bigger. I order the Smokehouse Single because that used to be my favorite. However when my burger came toe it was a little disappointing. The burger was smashed flat and very very soggy. Usually I don't comment on appearances because sometimes something might taste better than it looks. However if after tasting I feel I can do much better at home I have to speak up. The burger was missing BBQ sauce but no worries, the server brought me extra on the side. The onion rings were still pretty good although I suspect they were the frozen kind but what do you expect from a burger diner? I ordered a cherry coke which is still delicious as I remember it and I think I got a few refills and they still do the ketchup hearts and butterflies in the paper trays. I always though it was cute. Now what I really was surprised at and kinda sad about is that the table top juke boxes no longer worked. They used to be that you dropped a nickle in the slot and got to pick from a variety of oldies from the 50s and 60s and even thru the 70s and 80s in some locations. This touch made the place fun and unique and even something you kind of looked forward to. They used to have desserts like apple pie al la mode and fudge brownie sundaes but sadly those have been removed from the menu as well. The only choice of dessert were their shakes. I didn't partake. Probably nothing wrong with the shakes it's just that when you are in the mod for apple pie and They don't have any it spoils experience for dessert. I didn't want to be disappointed anymore than I already was. Luckily I was extremely hungry when I walked in and it was raining outside otherwise I might not have finished the burger. One thing I can say that might be positive is that since JR is a chain maybe other locations do a better Smokehouse.

Located in the heart of Melrose shopping this Johnny Rockets has a very retro vibe. Loved the vintage decor and enjoyed sitting at the counter. It just made you want to order a classic American hamburger and milkshake. The burgers are served fresh off the grill and fries are "endless" = free refills! Everything tasted fresh, clean, and delicious. Was pleasantly surprised at how tasty everything was. Service was friendly and fast. We will be back for more burgers next time we are in the neighborhood.

YUM! After venturing around Melrose for the afternoon, Ben Y. and I were starving and needed to eat something but QUICK. We decided to dash over to Johnny Rockets for a quick bite and we're glad we did! The burgers sure are tasty. The buns are thick and buttery and the burger melts in your mouth. I'd highly recommend the sweet potato fries. Reallllly good. Awesome milkshakes too. Prices are pretty decent on top of it. For a great burger experience, hit up Johnny Rockets for sure!

Met up with a friend at this location a while back while walking around Melrose going from shop to shop just browsing. Well, I was browsing. Just a simple burger with or without cheese and fries comes with a happy face on your plate for dipping. This is one of those locations where you see anyone and everyone. Bikers destination and celebrities stopping or strolling by. Watching cars zoom on by with the outdoor seating. Just a chill place to kick back and food you would expect because if you been to one Johnny's, you've been to them all. Sometimes consistency is key.

Wow, just wow. I don't think I have ever had such a bad experience with a server before. First I've been to a few of these locations around the country so I knew what to expect. Slightly cheesy location with basic dinner food. I have been to this location multiple times and it's never been great, but today hit a new low. The server was difficult and abrasive. The online menu did not match the store me ur so my to go order was obviously needing adjustment. She went on this long explanation of how the menu worked and justification of the mix up where she kept talking over me and cutting me off. I really just didn't care and just needed to make a call to get the right order. I tried to interrupt and she continued. I finally told her to stop arguing with me which she did. After she got a final word in and huffed away muttering under her breath about me. I placed the order with someone else, paid, and waited. When it was ready the server put on a very fake smile and said "here's your order sweety." I don't this that's an appropriate way to address anyone you are unfamiliar with especially when you have an upset customer. I tried to address the earlier conversation to actually apologize for snapping at her. At which point she went off again, cutting me off, talking over me, and like a child playing copycat repeating what I was saying to her. I could not believe that this server/assistant manager was behaving this way! I left with my food. I'll never be back and I'll highly doubt I'll go to any other location. I don't need to be a patron of a company that allows their employees to act and run the place as is children are in charge.

I ordered a bbq grilled chicken sandwich and the texture of the chicken seemed under cook.I informed the waiter and he was ok with changing to a burger instead, but overall it wasnt to my liking.I will probably pass on them for a while.FYI this location has noooo parking at all.

A brief review, the food is standard for what they offer at all locations. So I'd rate that a 4 but the service a 3. At this visit, they were either terribly understaffed so it took too long to take our order and get our food, it's either that or the servers were not efficient. Either way management should pick it up for customer satisfaction. Several tables didn't have napkins or utensils and the ground had a lot of litter. I hope to return for a fast burger and see the place pick up.

This is absolutely the worst Johnny Rockets I've ever been to. I live only 2 blocks away and everytime I come back I keep on thinking it can't always be that bad well it only gets worse. The service is horrendous with bad attitudes to boot. The Food is reasonably good but all the staff especially management needs to be replaced. I will probably never go there again.

Fun retro-decor and ambiance; couldn't help but order hamburgers, fries and shakes... hamburgers were terrific made to order with all the extra goodies, fries thick and crispy (just how we like them!), super tasty creamy shakes, music oldies rock'n'roll, etc., and the entire staff could be from the movie, American Grafitti! Clean place and fresh food prepared by friendly courteous people ~ we were peeking out the window looking for a 50's cadillac to drive by any time. Busy shopping and thought we'd try this place ~ we'll be back. :)

I normally love Johnny Rockets! That's the only reason why I'm giving two stars instead of one. This location is awful in every way. Bad service, Cold food, and don't even get me started about the bathroom :/ it's atrocious !! Run, don't walk !

    (2)
  • Adrian L.

The worst service I have ever had. The soda was flat and the burgers were sloppy. On top of that the waiter did not get our order right. This restaurant is garbage all around.

I used to love the chili cheese fries here. They closed down all the Johnny Rockets that I knew of when I lived in Northern CA, so I had not eaten there for over five years). Then to my surprise, the one by the farmer's market on 3rd and Fairfax in Los Angeles! I'm sure that place is called something else than "the farmer's market" now too. Anyway - portions are now half as large, but same price. I got sick about 30 mins later - it was really greasy (but I can eat the Hat's chili cheese fries and be okay...). Again, this was the first time I have had a bad experience at Johnny Rockets (their straws are now wrapped too), so it may have been just me, since I've changed my diet... They tasted awesome whiles eating them, though.

Awesome Shakes! Tried their new Candy Shake today and it was some sweet liquid bliss! ;) My other fave flavors are their dark chocolate and the banana shakes!! YUM! Love their burgers and fries too. BBQ Bacon Cheddar and the #12 Burger have got to be the best burgers ever! Oh, and you can't forget the ketchup art! That's pretty cool. ;) This location is also the original Johnny Rockets, so that's kinda cool too.

Just awful. I was a HUGE fan of this location back in the day. It's gone down hill so fast. I was met with unfriendly and unattractive male waiters who gave lousy service. The Inspector was in the restaurant during my meal so that could have been why they were in a foul mood. The food was cooked terribly as well. Wouldn't recommend this location. Instead goto the Hollywood Blvd location or Farmers Market. Best ones.

  • Sarah J.

I've only ever gotten take out from here so I can't complain about the service! I highly recommend the milkshakes! They're so thick and delicious. I always seem to get the grilled cheese, it's so good! Their veggie burgers are just boca burgers so nothing too special there.

    (4)
  • D. D.

Charming decorations and furnishings. Unfortunately, the vibe is better than the food. The burger is just barely average and the fires are just tasteless. However, service was very good. The staff is friendly and helpful.

  • Ashleigh E.

We were dying for burgers and fries, so we stopped in the other night. I thought the service was quick, so I'm kind of surprised to see the complaints! We both got the Original burger plate with all you can eat fries as part of their 5 for $5.50 (something around that price) with veggie patties. Burger was good and the fries were tasty...probably had a few too many servings of the fries.

Decent service and a meal on Melrose for about $6. Can't really beat that. Sure, it's a chain - and Johnny Rockets isn't a four star dining experience by any means but my meal did come with AYCE fries which is always an added bonus. Plus, although the indoor dining area was small, and not at all good for groups (just counter space), it was very well maintained. Not really too much I can write about here - my BLT was yummy and a fair price.

  • Seung Eun C.

This Johnny Rockets is one of my staples in the neighborhood and a great place to catch a bite when I'm walking my dog. Lots of outside seating and tables and I've been lucky with friendly servers. They currently have a special - 5 different types of burgers or sandwiches with unlimited yummy crunchy french fries for $5.49.. Yep, what a deal!!! Warning - there is a he-she meth addicted bum who begs for $ and is a complete annoyance in the area. DO NOT give her $ and if you can, avoid looking at her. You have been warned!!

While holidaying in LA I took my family to experience retro American diner food. My family, especially my 10 year old son, liked it so much that we visited twice. He liked that they give away a Johnny Rockets paper hat! The decor is consistent with 50s retro. The restaurant was clean although its a poky restaurant and there isn't much dining space inside so you need to sit at the counter, which was fun and authentic. The service was good to the point that I felt a decent tip was in order. The burgers were decent, but could have done with some more fresh salad, as were the onion rings. My son wan't crazy about their hot dog, though. My favourite was the peanut butter shake - tasty but decadent.

  • Mac B.

The Melrose Johnny Rocket's was the first one ever, all the waaaaaaaaay back in 1986! Haha, I always thought this chain was much older simply because of the 50s decor, but I guess it's all an act. Who cares tho! The service here is always wonderful. I like bellying-up to the burger bar where you get to chit chat with the waiter and play with the juke boxes, but there's also a lovely patio if you're more interested in people-watching on Melrose (which is almost always a good time). The burgers here are nothing to write home about, but they're also nothing to shake a fist at. They're moderately inexpensive, the toppings all seem fresh enough, and the patty size is actually pretty huge. They used to do a weekday deal to compete with Subway - $5.49 for a burger and bottomless fries. While I don't think that's around anymore, I still think it's a fun place for a quick, cheap date.

This location is the original Johnny Rickets, at least that's what is typed on the menu. It's in the heart of Hollywood but the actual restaurant is really in need of basic upkeep. Everything was really old looking, even the staff had worn, unkept uniforms. It just didn't look anywhere near as clean and put together as other locations. The ice cream however was delicious.

Johnny Rockets @Gardener & Melrose, use to be the BEST.I recently went to this location for the usual,Turkey Burger & Fries. I get to the restaurant & the order was sitting on top of the shelf.I thought it to be odd for several reasons. They gave me a window of 15 mins,it takes me apprx 8 mins to get to the restaurant,so I was there prior to the 15 mins passing.2nd oddity was I did not smell anything like a grill, burgers cooking nor fries being fried. A woman came from the back & rang the order up. As she was ringing the sale up,I looked in the bag to see that the order looked right to me.There were no fries. I asked the clerk, "Where are the fries?", she replies "Oh,you want fries thats extra! $4.00" I advised her that I have never been charged extra for the fries.as this is an actual meal that was ordered. She explained we changed. "You want them $4.00". So I asked how long, yes I would like fries with my burger. She stated appprx 4-5mins. she throws the basket in the fry bin,no scent of them cooking,no crackling of the hot oil receiving frozen fries! and less than 3 mins she is bagging them. I get home and the burger was the most disgusting thing ever! I am not sure how old or how long that burger was on top of the counter, but clearly a lot longer than when the order was called in, as the bun was actually soggy ! Then I take the freshly fried fries out & they are not even slightly warm.I have gone to this location for over 2 yrs & never had this experience. The food was always yummy & very warm.Very Disappointing! the Worst meal Ever!! I would not recommend this location to any one! I will try the La Cienega location again, and if it sucks too,I will write about it.If its wonderful as usual I will put out another good report for that location only.hope this helps you to not crave a burger that is consistently good, and then the big let down of it being the worst ever!

Good food but piss poor service. I went there for with five of my friends. I told the waiter that I was in a hurry. I guess he didn't like that, because he proceeded to serve people who came in after our group. He had our order, but made himself scarce after he got it. We could have died of thirst also. Message to Johnny Rocket Management, you better upgrade your wait staff. They aren't handling things for you.

.....so today I decided to stop by.....was really craving a Philly cheesesteak.....when I got around to ordering the guy on the other side of the joint ordered the last one!!! Like WTF REALLY!!?? So anyways I got tricked swindled and bamboozled out of a Philly cheese steak...so I ordered the Houston which was really good....but half way done with my burger I see a Philly cheese steak on the grill like WTF SERIOUSLY !!! It's ok tho I'd rather stay with jersey mikes for those

Actually, I dont really like their food, because I dont eat burger and chips. the only reason which I like here is the location. it is fun for walk around after the dinner. The 1000 calories is crazy and nice! try it if you want to be fatter!

  • Rob A.

Melgard next door apparently didn't have air conditioning, and it's too hot to sit outside. And really, all I want is a cheeseburger. And that's what they know how to do at Johnny Rockets. And you can't beat the fries.

  • Angela C.

Fun 50's style diner to go with my parents when I visit them in LA. The decor is really cute, and it's nice they are dog friendly so we were able to order and eat with them in the patio. the thick fries were fresh, the burger was mediocre, I actually presumed Johnny Rockets would be a bit better quality. They don;t give you an option on how to cook the meat (it came VERY well-done) and the potato bread bun was a bit big and overwhelming. I might stop by here again if I am in the neighborhood but I am more likely to go to a different nearby burger place.

  • Jeffrey K.

Johnny Rockets was typical diner fare. I got the patty melt with fries with a voucher I bought online. The patty melt was tasty, but the burger didn't take up the whole bread. The cherry cola here is also instantly refreshing, as is the vanilla coke. I've had Johnny Rockets before, but the service of this place is what really convinced me to write a review. While me and my friend were talking to each other if we get refills or not, the waiter comes zooming up with brand new colas. The extra fries were also piping hot. Decent food and good service.

  • Frances L.

I'd say that all Johnny Rockets fair about the same, but that's just not always the case. The ones I went to in Arizona were all in malls and were awful...service & food. While the one in Hollywood is also inside a mall, at least they're quick and there are tons of booths. This location, being the very first one opened back in 1986, fairs A-OK, but as a whole, the institution is nothing special. Simple 50s style diner food, nickel jukeboxes, and a nostalgic Americana feel. I drop in for cheap lunches in the middle of shopping around Melrose when I'm in the mood for some grease and the places that I do love in the 'hood are either closed until dinner or are jam packed (see: Blu Jam). Keep it simple with a burger and fries or their freshly battered chicken tenders w/ a side of half and half and you'll be set. Just don't expect to have your mind blown. But hey, at least it's better than Jack-in-the-Box...

Johnny Rockets is Johnny Rockets...it's a little slow from time to time depending on what day you go. I will give them props for their milk shakes though! Mmm.

Yummy Burgers, full of tourists. that's it. Staff is very nice. be patient though, lots of idiots tend to troll around Melrose. Eat here cuz you're too good for McDonald's.

Johnny rockets on melrose the first! The chef, was good at his craft; I believe it has been the same each time of gone in. Robert was my server; he was grand, attentive and pleasure. As for the other servers, i must have walked in on a day the manager was somewhere else; all the other employees were on their phones, in the corner booth. Now it's okay if you're on your break or if its an emergency; however gluing your face to Instagram while on the clock, is usually unprofessional. I used to work fast food; and mystery shoppers would almost get me fired if I was even looking at the time via phone! I would have tipped, but Robert was busy with other customers, and I'd rather my tip go to the server and chef; not the slobs. Good food, good drinks, I'm definitely a fan

I came to this Johnny Rockets on Melrose as a tourist from England, and I was really impressed with the continued quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff each time we visited. However, cleanliness was not at it's best. It is a small restaurant with limited indoor seating (but plenty of outdoor seating), so I don't see why keeping the shop floor clean was difficult. Overall, the food was delicious, the staff were courteous and the view of bustling Melrose was awesome.

this Johnny Rockets is near the Zephyr Theater on Melrose fast service and has been great space for our theater meetings for our upcoming "The Deep Throat Sex Scandal' off Broadway play opening in January 2013. deepthroattheplay.com

This is the ORIGINAL joint! Food was good, consistent with all the other establishments I've visited over the years. However this one was pretty small, so they have a large outdoor seating area. Unfortunately that meant the birds were pretty prevalent. The service was pretty good considering they had to deal with inside and outside customers. Bathroom was..interesting. I recommend the chili cheese fries, burgers and apple pie.

It is pretty much like I remembered it when I worked here for a short while in 1992. The main difference is that menu has been expanded to broaden the appeal. I am not sure it was necessary, but at least they kept the interior pretty much unchanged. I knew Ronn Teitlebaum agonized over every single detail. He probably would find 20 things that have changed, but that attention to detail is what made him and his restaurants so successful.

I LOVE JOHNNY ROCKETS !!! But this one was AWFUL! Maybe because they are located on Melrose, they think that they will get business anyway, no matter how crappy the service, food etc. . I gave it three chances over the last two years and always have the same experience. The waiters are lazy and not very pleasant, the food is mediocre and the bathroom is DISGUSTING !!!!!! I don't even know how that bathroom would pass any kind of code ?! Worst bathroom I have ever seen, and I have traveled Europe, believe me, I've seen it all ;)

Guilty trip to Johnny Rockets with my husband when we were in the middle of a 10 day juice fast and we just couldn't take it anymore! I like walking past their nice outdoor dining area to sit at the counter. Really good fries. We splurged on an ice cream sundae which, if you've ever done a juice fast and been that starving, was heavenly and more than hit the spot. Just the right size, just the right choccy syrup.

Was shopping around Melrose when my girl and I decided to hit up good 'ol Johnny Rockets. Upon arriving, they give you nickels to put into their little music box that plays all sorts of oldies but goodies music. We sat right at the counter where we were served promptly. The fact that it was quite busy, I was seriously afraid that my food wouldn't come out as great, but I was proven wrong!!! I've had tuna sandwiches before, but DAMN GINAAAA, never this good before WHAT THE "F"???!!! WOW!!!! Haha seriously though, it was on point yo! My girl even said her burger was the bombdiggity!!! The guy behind the counter seemed pretty enthusiastic about his job. Kind and respectful, I gave him a good tip for keeping us entertained and satisfied. I would definitely come here again with my friends.

GO JOHNNY GO! whenever i come to this place i feel like i'm back in the 50's. The burgers are good, but it's a generic type of burger. So far i haven't had any bad experiences...just fun times with friends and big burgers that are tasty. that is all.

I have been here two times. The first time, I was starving and in a hurry, so I ordered french fries. To go. That's not so hard, right? Forty-five minutes later, I had my fries. Ummm what. The second time, I had a chocolate malt because I went through such a chocolate malt phase back in the day, and the waiter offered me some water because the malt is so thick. How sweet, I thought... until I got the water. It had chopped onions in it. Ummm what.

Let me start by saying that I LOVE Johnny Rockets! Their tuna melt is perfect, the onion rings with ranch are a source of delight, their burgers, shakes, yum, yum, YUM. Unfortunately, the location on Melrose shames the Rocket name. I should have known things would turn out badly when I called to place an order and the waiter hung up in my face. I was placing a large lunch order (just over 20 people) and usually I fax these over to whatever restaurant we're eating at that day, so I call, get the fax number and send it over, simple right? NO WAY I call to confirm only to find out that they didn't get the fax, he tells me they're having problems with the fax and to send it again, I decide that since they're having problems maybe I should just read the order over the phone. He reluctantly agrees and places me on hold for several minutes before hanging up on me (WTF!?!?!) But, I was determined to have the tuna melt I love so much with a yummy side of onion rings so I pressed on. Finally, the order was placed and someone went to pick it up. There's no place to park that's convenient for take-out and worse still the order wasn't even ready 45 min later when they went to pick it up. They waited around another 30 minutes and when she got back with the food, SURPRISE they'd messed up the order. Two people ordered grilled ham & cheese sandwiches and apparently they were out of ham so just made them grilled cheese sandwiches without mentioning it and while still charging us for a ham & cheese (seriously, who does this???) When we called to let them know they'd forgotten like 4 things off of the order they...kind of implied that we were lying or that we should check the bags again. Ummm, OK, still not there, now what? They were completely unwilling to deliver the items even though it was their mistake so after making our way to their establishment for a 2nd time, we still had to wait 15 minutes before the food was ready. UGH! As much as I love Johnny's after this horrific experience I have no plans to ever return to this particular branch. Hollywood & Highland from here on out!

First of all, the service sucked. It took our server 15 mins to get us all our drinks, and it wasn't even busy. Our food took even longer, and the woman wouldn't answer us when we asked what was going on, but would just go back into the kitchen. My friends ordered the grilled sandwich and a regular burger, I got a chocolate milkshake. The food was pretty good and the milkshake satisfactory, but it wasn't that special. I'm not really a fan of Johnny Rockets, and I prefer In-N-Out or Cafe 50's burgers. The decor is the usual Rockets fare although this location had a smaller indoor area than others. Wouldn't recommend this location.

it pains me to give this place two stars only. Back in the day (early 90's) this was the place to go after shopping for trashy club clothes on Melrose. The people-watching, the delicious burgers and thick shakes and the friendly service were something to look forward to. Now it's but a shadow of that. Terrible service, rubbery overcooked burgers, underdone onion rings and pigeons attacking outside diners. Don't sit next to the seating for the other restaurant/bar with outside seating because you'll get 1950's songs in one ear and gangsta rap in the other ( was jealous of the people eating yummy pizzas and drinking beer next door.) The bathroom is disgusting and is right next to the dishwashing station.

Great Service! But I dont really experience any of the nostalgia since i was bornin the 80's, so i dont give a hoot. Bottom line... greasy overpriced chain food. nothing special. i respect the concept though.

Johnny Rockets is amazing. The style of the place is so cool, and more importantly, it is unique. The waiter that my friends and I got was helpful and funny. He got the whole restaurant to sing for my friend because it was her birthday. Then she got free ice cream. We tried out the jukebox, which I had never seen before in any other restaurant. It was interesting. If you like original diner style food, then this is the place for you.

Everyone seems to love the shit out of this chain but, in my opinion, they are over-priced, over-hyped (they are now on cruise lines) and overly-trendy. I'll take the little corner dive-cum-bar over JRs any day. Or even Houlihans. At least I can get a Black 'n Tan to wash down the burger and fries. Can't get that at JRs.

I love eating here in the patio area. This location is especially nice since its off the Melrose strip, where you can people watch. For fairly reasonable $$, you can enjoy urself decent chili cheese fries as I did. But I've had better. Service is alright.

I love chili. There are few things in this world I love more than a good all-meat chili. This is why I like Johnny Rockets. Sure, there are other places I could go, but I know quality will always be consistent at JR no matter where I am. This is where the huge BUT comes in. I came here on a Friday night when it was too cold to sit outside. It became glaringly apparent that this is the first Johnny Rockets location because of how stranger-coughing-on-your-food small it is. There was only one person behind the counter (perhaps that's as many as they can fit) to take orders and serve the food. I felt incredibly sad for him because he seemed to be struggling to serve the other two couples. He was nice, did the whole happy face with ketchup on a serving dish thing. But he was definitely not prompt because apparently some jerk ordered 100+ dollars worth of food and his credit card got repeatedly declined. While that was interesting dinner entertainment, we had to wait extra long to get our food. I'd like to mention that the entire time, the guy was incredibly patient, courteous, and understanding with the dumb customer who seemed like he was trying to use a stolen credit card. If I were him, I would have called the cops after the first five minutes. Food was good, hot, consistent. No complaints there. But I figure if they can't handle barely a full room inside, the service must be atrocious during the day when it's busy. Though I'm willing to find out first hand.

I use to work at a Johnny Rockets. I worked my way up to night manager, so I am a little biased and also critical when it comes to JR's. I know how quickly your supposed to get your fries after you order, I know you're supposed to greet every customer as they walk in the door. Every aspect of JR's philosophy is quick and friendly service. Not to mention a sparkling clean dinning room and fresh, good food. So when I go to Johnny Rockets I am super critical of those things. It has a lot to do with the owner and how strict they are with the JR's corporate policy. Most of them I think don't really enforce it, or at least management doesn't. Service at this JR's is particularly lackadaisical. Sort of a hap hazard attitude. A friend of mine worked at this location and I think he quit or was fired at least 5 times. They do have a great people watching patio for all the Melrose foot traffic. As a matter of fact, I noticed some poor soul trying to wave down a server from his patio seat, as he sat with his menu for at least 5 min or so. The food remains the same, it's good but not great. Their fries are hot and crispy, their tuna sandwich (or tuna melt) is good. They've created several new variations of their burgers over the years, but I always order an original with cheese. It's only an option if you are on Melrose and in the mood for a burger. Otherwise, there are better options.

i like me some johnny rockets! especially down melrose. i know it's over-priced and sometimes the waitstaff forgets that you even made an order...but there's a lil sumthin' that gets me over the little isms. they have thee most delicious veggie burgers and tuna melts i've ever tasted. and you can't tell me a smile doesn't creep to your lips whenever a waiter pours the ketchup into something that resembles a smile...COME ON! i've been to many a rockets and this is by far the funnest. you're in L.A....accept the fact the the locale is going to be a bit uppity...i've accepted it & moved on with my life. stop by this place on your way to poseurs...it's worth it. ~cheers!

In about the summer of 1986, I walked in to the very first Johnny Rockets here on Melrose in Hollywood, and ordered a cheeseburger and fries. I sat next the guy that opened it. I do remember his name was Ron, and asked why he named it Johnny Rockets instead of Ronny Rockets. He said Johnny sounded all American like apple pie. Being the inquisitive person that I am, I asked his background and how he got into it. Funny enough, he wasn't from a food background. From what I remember, he was in either textiles or something to do with either fabrics or fashion which might have explained Melrose as a starting point. I have lived in Hollywood my whole life and he got in during the buildup of Melrose. I ate my burger as I spoke with him. He proudly told me about grinding the steak in the back fresh answering how the meat tasted so good. Back story aside, I have always loved the place. As the chain grew, I remembered his words about how they used to do it right back in the 40's and 50's and how this type of place was simply needed. Personally, I think he paid a visit to our famous Apple Pan for inspiration. Great food, great shakes and malts, simple menu. Always five stars from me. Update 2012: The sad truth is, when the founder died and the family took over, I guess it was all about the dollar. Long gone are the fresh ground patties, and the taste has gone down hill. This used to be 5 stars for the first several years of JR, but now, I've reduced it to 3. Yeah, the shakes and pies are still pretty good, but the meat is sub-par

Sometimes, a girl just needs to eat a burger. A fatty, juicy, burger smothered in cheese and dripping with grease. Johnny Rockets is the place to do that. My server was totally hilarious and even gave me a free Strawberry Milkshake after he made an extra one on mistake. This was the highlight of my week!

It's wierd how i come to this place every once in a while yet never tried their burgers! In highschool, i use to come here with my friends after school to eat their chili cheese fries.. onion rings.. and their egg salad sandwich. oh and can't forget those thick milkshakes. its hard to suck it out with a straw! oh, and the smiley ketchup faces the waiters would draw. and the nickels you put to hear the songs you order from the mini jukebox!! i usually buy like 5 songs! only 25cents! hehe. i love johnny rockets.

Johnny Rockets getting 4-5 stars on yelp? What is wrong with the world today? Uninspired food. Small selection. No flavor. This particular location of the chain is very small and awkward.

I'm more of a hole in the wall, burger stand type of girl but decided to try this for lunch today since I was in the area. I do give them kudos for free refills on fries and sodas (yeah, cherry coke). The #12 was pretty good but (and this is not their fault), once you have a mom & pop stand burger JR's just doesn't quench that taste the way it use to. I will say service was great.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this particular Johnny Rocket's. For those of you who happen to be fellow Hanson fans (I'm sure there are a couple of you out there...don't be shy), you will remember this as the place Cindy Crawford took them when they were on MTV's House of Style. Now that I've made a complete ass of myself, let me further explain. This is a chain restaurant, and a 1950s-esque replication of a diner no less, but I have never been disappointed. Sure they've raised prices, but it's fun, the food is consistant, and the milkshakes are tasty. Bring some nickels (maybe it's quarters now) for the mini-jukeboxes, and order yourself some tasty treats.

I recommend Route 66 and the patty melt. I usually have to choose between a mocha fudge or strawberry malt. If I wasn't pawing for vintage clothes with high school friends I would have tried the rocket wings. Philly cheesesteak is good. We sat at the counter.

The food here is good but I think it is a little pricey when you order a few things. My favorites include the original with the tangy red sauce and the chili cheese fries with onions are still the best I have ever had. The atmosphere is fun and energetic. I love how you can choose the music that plays in the restaurant.

Came on a Sat night to take advantage of the "5 for $5" Dodgers promo. Server was busy (lone server, not long before closing) but kicked it into high gear and didn't miss a beat with any of the tables, including a party of 8 that sat down a few minutes after us. Food was quick, and tasted exactly as I've come to expect from this chain. I've always been a fan and am happy that my local franchise has it goin' on.

I love that Johnny Rockets has that 50's/60's diner vibe and the staff is always warm and friendly. I always have a hard time deciding what I want when I go there, because everything on the menu is excellent. You can never go wrong by ordering one of their milkshakes. And for the main course I suggest getting one of their burgers, the 3 mini chili cheese dogs or a grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough (good with bacon! mmm bacon) and don't forget the side of fries!

    (5)
  • kyla h.

In a word...nasty. It may have been the pigeons hopping around the patio, shitting on the tables, the incomprehensibly incompetent waiter, the consistency of the chili, which was about half squished beans, half nebulous orange grease giving my plate of chili cheese frieds appearance of a bubbling lava lamp. Or maybe it was that one nauseating pigeon who looked like he had been put through the wash, feathers all willy nilly and falling out. Or maybe it was the fact that fries don't even come with the burgers! At any rate the experience was utterly macabre. I had never been to a J. Rock before and I will certainly not be returning.

In the days before I was vegan, I loved to make a meal out of Johnny Rockets' french fries and one of their unbelievably delicious vanilla milkshakes. The 1950's diner decor is complete with juke boxes and plush booths. It's Melrose, so parking can be a drag.

nostalgic of the good old days when i was a child...when mommy would make grilled cheese sandwiches or egg salad sandwiches... mommy never made a smiley face out of ketchup though, and they do that here :) i also love their chili with cheese and onions, and for dessert, their apple pie a la mode. they have some of the crispiest, flakiest apple pie. mmmmm.
